Unauthorized Port-Out Fraud: How to Lock Your Phone Number

Опубліковано 10 липня 2026

Your phone number is more than a way to make calls — it's often the key that unlocks your bank accounts, email, and social media through text-message verification codes. Criminals know this, which is why unauthorized porting, sometimes called port-out fraud, has become a serious threat. In this scam, someone transfers your number to a different carrier or a new SIM card without your permission, then uses it to intercept your calls and texts, including the one-time codes that protect your accounts. The good news is that most carriers offer a simple, free way to lock your number against this kind of takeover, and a few habits can dramatically lower your risk.

What Is Port-Out Fraud, Exactly?

Number porting is a legitimate process that lets you keep your phone number when you switch carriers. Fraudsters exploit this same process. Using personal details they've gathered from data breaches, social media, or phishing, they contact a carrier (often not even yours) pretending to be you, and request that your number be ported to a new account or a SIM card they control. Once the port completes, your phone loses service, and the scammer's device starts receiving your calls and text messages — including password resets and two-factor authentication codes for your email, banking, and shopping accounts.

This is closely related to SIM-swap fraud, where a criminal convinces your own carrier to move your number onto a new SIM card. The end result is similar: your number ends up in someone else's hands, and they use it to break into your other accounts.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Your phone suddenly shows "no service" or "SOS only" with no explanation, especially after you receive an unexpected text about a SIM or account change.
  • You get a text or email from your carrier confirming a port request, SIM change, or account update you didn't make.
  • You stop receiving calls or texts, and people tell you they can't reach you.
  • You notice password-reset emails or login alerts for accounts you didn't try to access.
  • You receive an unexpected call or text asking you to "verify" account details, which may be a precursor scammers use to gather information before attempting a port.

How Scammers Gather the Details They Need

Port-out fraud usually starts with information gathering. Scammers may buy leaked personal data from old breaches, scan your social media for your birthdate, address, or mother's maiden name, or send phishing texts and emails pretending to be your carrier, bank, or a delivery service. Some also call pretending to be tech support or carrier staff to trick you into revealing account PINs or verification answers. The more personal detail they collect, the easier it is to impersonate you convincingly when contacting a carrier.

How to Lock Your Number With Your Carrier

Most carriers now offer a specific security feature designed to block unauthorized ports and SIM changes. It typically goes by names like "port-out protection," "number lock," or "account PIN/passcode." Here's how to set it up:

  • Contact your carrier directly using the number on your bill or their official app — not a number from a text or email you received.
  • Ask specifically about port-out protection or a number lock. This feature blocks any port or SIM-change request unless it's disabled first, usually only by you, in person or through verified identity checks.
  • Set a strong account PIN or passcode that is required before any changes can be made to your account, separate from your regular login password.
  • Avoid easily guessed security answers such as your birthdate or a relative's name that might be found on social media.
  • Review your account online to confirm the lock is active, and ask the carrier to confirm it in writing or via their app if possible.

If your carrier doesn't offer this by default, ask explicitly — it's increasingly considered a standard security option, and most major carriers support some version of it.

What to Do If Your Number Is Ported Without Permission

  • Contact your carrier immediately using an alternate phone or the carrier's official website chat, and report the unauthorized port. Ask them to reverse it and place a lock on the account.
  • Alert your bank using the number on your card or statement, since your number may have been used to intercept verification codes.
  • Change passwords on your email, banking, and other important accounts from a device you trust, and enable app-based or hardware authentication instead of SMS codes where possible.
  • Check for unauthorized transactions or new accounts opened in your name, and report anything suspicious to the relevant institution.
  • File a report with your national consumer-protection or anti-fraud authority so there's an official record, which can help with disputes and recovery.

Reducing Your Risk Going Forward

Beyond locking your number, it helps to move away from SMS-based verification where you can, using authentication apps instead. Be cautious about sharing personal details publicly, be skeptical of unsolicited calls or texts asking you to confirm identity information, and periodically check that your carrier's security settings, including any port-out lock, are still active. A small amount of setup now can prevent a very disruptive and costly situation later.
