How to Block Spam and Unknown Callers on iPhone

Опубликовано 09 июля 2026

Spam and scam calls are frustrating, but your iPhone already includes several built-in tools to reduce them. None of these features can stop every unwanted call, since scammers constantly change numbers, but used together they can dramatically cut down on interruptions while still letting real calls from people you know get through. Here's how each tool works and how to set it up properly.

Silence Unknown Callers

This feature sends calls from numbers not in your contacts, not in your recent calls, and not from Siri suggestions straight to voicemail without ringing your phone. The call still shows up in your call log and voicemail, so you can check it later, but your phone stays quiet.

To turn it on, go to Settings, then Phone, then Silence Unknown Callers, and switch it on.

Keep in mind the tradeoff: legitimate calls from a doctor's office, a delivery driver, or a new client will also be silenced if their number isn't already saved on your phone. This feature works best if you're comfortable relying on voicemail and call-back for anyone you don't already know, or if you save important numbers in advance whenever possible.

Blocking specific numbers

If a particular number keeps calling, you can block it directly.

  • Open the Phone app and go to Recents.
  • Tap the information icon next to the number you want to block.
  • Scroll down and tap Block this Caller.

You can also block numbers from Messages or from a contact card the same way. To review or remove blocked numbers later, go to Settings, then Phone, then Blocked Contacts.

Blocking is useful for repeat offenders, but scam operations often use a fresh number for every call, so blocking one number rarely stops the campaign entirely. It's still worth doing, since some numbers do call repeatedly.

Call-blocking and identification apps

iOS lets third-party apps identify and block calls using the Call Blocking & Identification extension. Once such an app is installed, you can enable it under Settings, then Phone, then Call Blocking & Identification, and turn on the toggle for that app.

These apps typically flag likely spam callers with a warning label as the phone rings, based on databases of reported numbers, and can automatically block numbers matching known spam patterns. This service and similar reputation-lookup tools work on this principle. No database is complete or perfectly up to date, so treat these labels as a helpful signal rather than absolute proof — always use your own judgment about what a caller is asking for.

Using Focus modes to manage calls

Focus, found under Settings then Focus, lets you control who can reach you during specific times or activities, such as work hours or sleep. When a Focus mode is active, you can choose to allow calls only from your contacts, from a specific group, or from no one at all, while everything else is silenced.

A useful option is enabling Allow Calls From and choosing All Contacts during a Focus session, so unknown numbers are silenced only while that Focus is on, rather than all the time. You can also allow repeated calls: if the same unknown number calls twice within a few minutes, iOS will let it through, since this is a common pattern for genuine emergencies.

Focus is especially helpful if you don't want Silence Unknown Callers running around the clock but still want quiet periods, like during meetings or overnight.

Reporting spam calls

Blocking protects you, but reporting helps address the wider problem.

  • If a call impersonates your bank, hang up and call your bank back using the number printed on your card or statement, not any number the caller gave you.
  • Report persistent spam or scam calls to your mobile carrier, which may offer its own filtering tools or a way to flag numbers.
  • Report scam attempts to your country's consumer-protection or anti-fraud authority, since patterns of reports help these bodies act against the source.
  • If a call claims to be from a government agency demanding urgent payment or personal information, treat it as suspicious. Genuine agencies rarely ask for payment via gift cards, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency over the phone.

A practical setup that balances safety and convenience

You don't need to enable every feature at once. A reasonable combination for most people is:

  • Turn on Silence Unknown Callers if you're comfortable relying on voicemail for new contacts, or skip it if you frequently need to answer unknown numbers for work or deliveries.
  • Install a reputable call-identification app so incoming calls show a spam warning when relevant.
  • Block specific numbers that repeatedly call you.
  • Use Focus modes for quiet periods like sleep or meetings, allowing contacts and repeated calls through.

None of these tools guarantee a completely spam-free phone, since call spoofing lets scammers disguise their real number. But combined, they filter out the majority of unwanted calls while keeping you reachable for the people and situations that matter.
